1.
Small, sea-washed stones Some we had taken home Others we had skimmed across the water Four months alone Since I wouldn't leave the coast And you couldn't stay A moment longer Here are a few stones Gathered from the shore today Use them as your paperweights Best wishes
2.
Another Year 02:49
Why do I not think of the others I only know that I don't Why do I return to your image I know I'm grasping at straws A year to wish and then fritter Away to the end See you again when it's winter And we all come home
3.
You Are Ours 05:08
Here you are, barely an hour old And you have your mother's eyes, you lucky child You are ours and we will raise you well No, there is nothing to be afraid of You are ours and we will raise you right We will feed you, we will tuck you in at night And if you should wake and start to cry I will sing to you the sweetest lullaby
4.
Out on the water See how the light gently shimmers So very quiet No one around, like in winter Gather your wishes We have a sky full of stars My only wish is To lie in your arms every morning
5.
No Other 03:25
What we said and what I have written May it be a lasting inscription No other No other one What we know and need to remember All around us are living shadows No other No other one
6.
Cold Hands 03:50
What's wrong with your hands So cold to the touch Come into the warm Rest your tired bones Let's sleep in each other's arms And be warm all winter long What's wrong with your hands Still cold to the touch If I can't keep them warm What good am I Let's sleep in each other's arms And be warm all winter long Sleeping in each other's arms To be warm all winter long
7.
No Words 02:56
And do we see now Do we see what we've done See how we've failed Every daughter and son No words, no measures Can bring any comfort Once your land's a desert Once your cities have sunk Open the borders And let those in need come All that we've taken Is for everyone No words, no endeavour Can come anywhere close Now we must all together Face whatever may come And do we see now Do we see what we've done
8.

Little River 04:22
Soft and sweet Is the breeze And so green Is the river Let me be Yours to keep Like a ring On your finger

about

You Are Ours is a debut of sorts, being the first new album of mine to bear my own name, after nearly a decade of releases under the moniker Les Étoiles. Alight, Alight, my fourth and final album as Les Étoiles, was recently reissued by Pegdoll records, this time under my own name.

You Are Ours is my first record since getting married and becoming a father, and most of the songs touch on one of those two subjects in some way. The title track was written for my son, while Little River is a homage to the place in Italy where my wife and I were married. An album of firsts, then, and of new beginnings.

Having said all that, not all the songs on the record are new. Sending Stones was written over ten years ago, but remained unrecorded until recently. Another Year is a reworking of an old Les Étoiles song, although it retains the original’s sweeping ondes Martenot countermelodies, performed by fellow Salopian and former label mate E L Heath, who also graces Moonlight On Derwentwater and Little River.

The album took nearly three years to complete. I finished recording in February 2020, but had to put music to one side for a while when the UK entered its first lockdown a month later. When I listen to the record again now, to my ears its unhurried pace reflects its gradual gestation and befits its slow emergence into the world.
