1.
Home is where I sit In transit Aboard an empty carriage Never to alight Nor mind that I haven’t touched a soul I’d give them all the slip But the heart sinks Who knows, would there be mourning? Steal away this ride Leaving behind No scent, no trace, no litter
2.
So, shall we walk through the ruins again? From there we can look out across the sea You have caught the sun today Now I can see your freckles When you leave I’ll visit you Wherever you settle
3.
Sunlight on sandstone Perfect kindling for the soul This is where we know We can make the hours slow Let your sorrows show We can take them one by one In the evening’s glow Will you ask me not to go? Sunlight on sandstone Perfect kindling for the soul
4.
She Was 03:17
She was once a small, flickering light In a starless sky She was sometimes the sound of a sigh In a summer breeze She was near almost all of the time Hidden in plain sight Now she sits By my side Hand in mine With a knowing smile
5.
So at long last All of your worries are also mine This is how we are now Two neighbouring branches grown entwined I will lie here and wait While you sleep soundlessly Dreaming of who knows what All that is unknowable
6.
Oh, I can see a year from now You’ll take me back to your home town You’ll take me back to Italy Where we will live quietly And you will paint beautiful landscapes And I will write songs about the sea So we will go to Italy Where we will live happily
7.
For Sally 03:08
This is a song For an old companion Who took away Some of the sadness The house doesn’t feel Like a home without her Taking a glance At the magnolia As long as it stands I will remember her There seeking shade From the heat of the sun
8.
Reminders 03:45
Putting flowers into a vase While still wearing oven gloves Sitting in your armchair Listening to your records Wandering around the house Gathering your ornaments Reading every letter From when we were courting
9.
10.
Snowfall 02:36
Just now it started to snow And I thought of you Wrapped in your warm duffle coat That was two winters ago How are you now? How long was the letting go? You will be happy I know And you will find A better companion Someone who gets to be told Here is my hand Take it and never let go

about

Alight, Alight, my fourth and final album as Les Étoiles, was originally released in July 2016. Nearly six years on, it has been reissued by Pegdoll records, this time under my own name.

With only sparse piano arrangements for accompaniment, these songs are thoughtful reminiscences of time spent living in Shropshire, Wales and London, spanning a period of eight years. Sunlight on Sandstone is about my home town in Shropshire, and the beautiful sight of its sandstone landmarks bathed in late afternoon sunshine. Sunset from the Ruins recalls summer evenings spent looking out to sea from the ruins of Aberystwyth castle. Where We Will Live, the most recent song on the album, imagines an idyllic life in rural Italy.

Taken as a whole, the album marks the closing of one chapter in my life and suggests the beginning of another.

"[A] mournful, lugubrious tenor that begs comparison to David Sylvian and Mark Hollis..." – 8/10, UNCUT
